Medina Housing Association launched its project to build a Foyer on the Isle of Wight in 1997, setting up a separate company, Foyer for the Island Limited, to take it forward. The Foyer opened in the summer of 2000.

The decision to build a Foyer in Ryde was based on the documented levels of housing need and unemployment amongst young people on the Island. Foyer for the Island provides high quality, purpose-built accommodation linked to training and employment access for up to 45 residents aged between 16 and 25.

Residents live in bedsits arranged in clusters of five, each cluster having a shared kitchen. Each bedsit has its own shower and toilet. The Foyer also has extensive communal areas, including a lounge, a computer suite and a gym. One cluster of five bedsits is specially adapted for people with impaired mobility.
